Windows will show a warning when you run it. That is expected, and the next section explains exactly why.

Windows will warn you. Here is exactly why.

When you run the installer, Windows shows a blue screen reading “Windows protected your PC” and describes the publisher as unknown.

That message is not a virus alert. Windows is not telling you it found something harmful. It is telling you that this program has not been signed with a paid code-signing certificate, so no certificate authority has formally vouched for who published it.

Driven is built by one independent developer. A code-signing certificate costs several hundred euros every year, and reputation with SmartScreen is earned slowly, over thousands of installs. Until Driven has the backing to cover that, Windows treats it the same way it treats nearly every small independent app on its first release.

Signing is one of the first things sponsorship will pay for. Read about supporting Driven ›

What you will see
Windows protected your PC

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.

App:  Driven-Clipboard-Setup.exe
Publisher:  Unknown publisher

Run anyway Don't run
  1. 1Click More info. The dialog expands and shows the file name.
  2. 2Click Run anyway. The installer opens normally from there.

You do not have to take my word for it.

Driven contains no malware, no adware, no bundled software and no tracking. Rather than ask you to trust that sentence, here are three independent ways to check it for yourself, none of which rely on me.

Check the fingerprint

Every build has a unique SHA-256 hash. If the file you downloaded produces this exact value, it is byte for byte the file I published and nothing altered it in transit.

Reading the published checksum…

In PowerShell, from your Downloads folder:

Get-FileHash .\Driven-Clipboard-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256

Scan it yourself

VirusTotal runs a file against roughly seventy antivirus engines at once, Microsoft Defender among them. You can look up this exact build by its fingerprint, or upload your own copy and watch the scan happen.

Unsigned installers sometimes draw a heuristic flag or two from smaller engines. That reflects the missing signature, not the contents.

Read the source

The code that becomes this installer is public. If you write software, you can read exactly what Driven does with what you copy, and confirm there is nothing in it that talks to a server.

What Driven does once it is installed.

The thing you are trusting a clipboard manager with is everything you copy. So it is worth being precise about where that ends up.

  • Everything is stored in a single SQLite file on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded.
  • No account, no sign-in, no email required. There is nothing to register.
  • No cloud sync, no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting phoning home.
  • You can pause capture at any time, and clear everything from Settings in one click.
  • Uninstalling removes the app. Your stored history is yours to delete whenever you want.

Ready when you are.

If anything above left you unsure, ask before you install. A question about what this software does is a fair thing to want answered.
